What our Fellows say
Hear how our Programme helps Fellows develop their bold neurotechnology ideas for real-world impact.
It was refreshing to work with people who have built companies - former CTOs and founders, who helped us bridge health economics and commercial modelling. Through introductions to experts at the NIHR BRC and Cambridge Enterprise, we began to understand how our device fits into the actual economic structure of the NHS. It’s not just about technology, but the ‘usability journey’. The fellowship enabled formative studies shaped by patient input and without that network, those high-level conversations with industry leaders would have taken years to facilitate.
Iwan Roberts - Frontier Fellow
Cambridge NeuroWorks introduced me to a different way of thinking. In the startup and industry world, failing is just a way of gathering data. If an idea doesn't work, you pivot. You don't take it personally. I realized that if a specific research direction fails, it’s not my failure - it’s just a sign that I’ve learned something important about what doesn't work. This "fail fast" approach actually saves time in the long run.
Kamila Maria Jozwik - Blue Sky Fellow
As part of the Cambridge NeuroWorks Blue Sky Fellowship, I’ve spent the first few months really refining the approach—I actually ripped up my initial plans a few times until I landed on the right path! In a typical academic setting, you're often encouraged to be safe, but Cambridge NeuroWorks gave me the space to keep tearing it up until I found the science that actually works.
Liam Collins-Jones - Blue Sky Fellow
I see a major shift toward collaboration over competition. Many of our team members were met through Cambridge NeuroWorks events, with several going on to collaborate on papers or join us. That network has been invaluable. Having a “safety net” at The Babraham Institute - where you can try, fail, and try again with genuine support—means everything, fostering both personal growth and a sense of stability that’s rare in the startup world.
